In times of mechanisation and quick modern life many humans long for a non-standard ambiance with consistent values.
Even in early days, old masters understood how to pleasantly and baffle and surprise observers with ingenious spatial effects. This special type of architectural painting began as early as in the days of Pompei, achieving its nemesis in the Baroque era. Since the 19th century this kind of painting has become known as Trompe l’oeil (optical illusion).
The aim Trompe l’oeil is to have the beholder perceive a painted object as real through perfect representation, outwitting the eye as it were. This is achieved by the use of perspective painting techniques whose basis is the strict observance of the rules of vision.
